I came across this earlier this week in the boiler room of a four-plex and wondered if any one else had??

Paper tape, self adhesive and reinforced like packing tape, used as firetape.
Is it MOA approved?? IRC ??? IBC???


Must include awful color.

I have never seen it before. My question would be if it is approved fire tape why doesn't it have an ID of some kind, such as a ESC or listing number printed on it? At the very least there should be a brand on it somewhere.

I hadn't heard of it either but it appears to be acceptable for walls but not ceilings. Here is a web link to the product which seems to have proper listings. It's called "E-Z Fire Tape."

I agree with Carol that it seems difficult to identify without markings but I guess it is probably the only red tape likely to be seen on drywall seams.

Here's what Martin Schwan with the Anchorage Fire Department has to say on this tape.

Hi Troy, we have seen this being used in the Muni but because of the strict manufacturer installation procedure the industry is getting away from it…basically the problem occurs when there is a delay between installing the sheetrock and the fire tape…per the manufacturer it shall be applied immediately and when that is not followed dust accumulates and the adhesive does not adhere very well to the sheetrock. This situation is revealed when you pull on the tape…it will release. Sometimes the installer will try to mask this situation by spraying M77 glue on it which of course is not allowed and invalidates the listing. Take care…
